The Wildflower Rescue Committee
Two things can happen when a patch of trillium or lady slippers sits in the path of a new home site. They can get bulldozed under—or, with the help of alert property owners, they can be transplanted to new sites. Some rescued plants are moved to Conservancy property sites, when appropriate. Others are potted up and sold at the annual Spring Plant Sale at the Leland Village Green to help fund the Conservancy’s mission. Want to help our Wildflower Rescue Committee with some or all of it? At our 2006 Annual Picnic we raised $67,000 for land protection efforts—and had a lot of fun doing it! There are many tasks, from gathering items for the auction to helping with our Kids Tent to creating centerpieces and displays for our tables to working the event. These hardworking people are the folks who create and maintain the trails and viewing platforms you’ll enjoy. They are the keepers and caretakers of our Natural Areas and Preserves. We also have a need for tree planters or people willing to help with digging up invasive species and replacing them with native plants. There’s much to do year-round! These are very knowledgeable volunteers who lead hikes and spread our message at our Preserves and Natural Areas. Training is extensive and being a Docent requires a large commitment of time. Our booth is a great way for people who are unfamiliar with the Conservancy to get to know us and for us to find new members. Many of our members volunteer to man the booth at summer events. They answer questions, pass out literature and sell Conservancy clothing. If you would like to be a booth volunteer, call Communications Director Carolyn Faught 231-256-9665 or email her at cfaught@theconservancy.com. We will hold a training session in June.
We are also in search of a “Booth Captain,” someone who will take on the responsibility of getting the booth where it has to go, setting it up and tearing it down at seven or eight events throughout the summer. This job often takes in the weekends, requires a large vehicle and a strong person to set it all up. It can be a one-person job, but always goes easier with a partner. If you have a place of business where you deal with the public, please display our brochure. We have a nice acrylic rack we can provide that does not take up much space. The tourists and visitors who come to this area, and love it as much as you do, are hard for us to reach. You can do it for us, and help us gain new members that will help to protect this place we all love. If you are a resort operator, you could put a brochure in every room! |
