My friend Joan Brewer took the picture on the east side of Stony Point on March 4th. She was following the sun around the county and happened across this group of wild turkeys, and had never seen a white one before. A gaggle? A Google? What is the word for a gathering of turkeys? Thanksgiving??? 
She doesn't have a computer and asked me to submit it for "Why Leelanau?"

As year round Glen Arborites we are now very conscious of the abundant wild life that we see from our cottage window in all the seasons on Sleeping Bear Bay. The bufflehead ducks and swans stay all winter and put on quite a show parading up and down the beach as we watch in amazement and amusement.

My wife and I have hiked Whaleback several times in different seasons, always a great experience. It was a little tough parking the other day since I drove my Little Fit rather than the Jeep, but we managed and really had a great time taking pictures and enjoying the view.

Why? Because you don't have to travel hours to find "dark skies" for special moments! These two images were from the same night (morning) about 4am on 3-9-08. The green band of aurora was at the Grand Traverse Light looking north and the reddish aurora was near Omena looking south. Never have I seen two different shows going on at the same time in both directions! Oh, and it was cold out … about -10f … long exposures made the colors more saturated.

Why Leelanau? Because it is the one place my family can all agree on as our Number One vacation destination. That's why we bought a home in Leland right in town. I know I will never be without company as long as my family and friends know I'm in Leelanau. No matter the season, or the weather, there is nothing better than to get up in the morning and walk into town for a hot cup of coffee and a great view of Big Blue.
