Wildlife at my kitchen window

By Leelanau Conservancy at 11:00 am on Tuesday, May 13, 2008

I came across this the other day, and thought I'd share it. It was shot from my kitchen window!   This guy casually walked down the path after a while, stood looking out at the lake, yawned and wagged his stub of a tail, then quietly moved off down the hill.  He was back a couple days later, staring at me from the driveway in the front of the house.  I swear he was looking at me both times!

Abundance of wildlife

This fox was on my deck already when I noticed him;  it's in a quiet sunny corner off an upper level of the house.  I watched him for over half an hour.  He yawned, stretched, grew observably sleepy, he rolled over and slept, he got up and explored, sat down again, laid down, then got up and sat quietly observing the wide woods before him.  It was magical, and I felt so fortunate.  I am hoping he/she has a den close by and that the whole family comes around often.  We have seen foxes around all this winter.

Living in Leelanau is a special privilege for many reasons, but one high on my list is the abundance of wildlife around us.  There is still enough healthy environment here, and people who care about it, for a compatible and rich co-existence with nature in this beautiful little peninsula.  Some would even say there is a special kind of energy around us here, and if we open our eyes and take the time to look, it becomes obviously true.  –A sort of "Namaste" with Nature.

White turkey at Stony Point

By Leelanau Conservancy at 1:35 pm on Tuesday, March 11, 2008

My friend Joan Brewer took the picture on the east side of Stony Point on March 4th. She was following the sun around the county and happened across this group of wild turkeys, and had never seen a white one before. A gaggle? A Google? What is the word for a gathering of turkeys? Thanksgiving??? :-) She doesn't have a computer and asked me to submit it for "Why Leelanau?"

Abundant wild life

By Leelanau Conservancy at 1:29 pm on Tuesday, March 11, 2008

As year round Glen Arborites we are now very conscious of the abundant wild life that we see from our cottage window in all the seasons on Sleeping Bear Bay.  The bufflehead ducks and swans stay all winter and put on quite a show parading up and down the beach as we watch in amazement and amusement.
