Creating new Leelanau citizens

By Leelanau Conservancy at 2:28 pm on Friday, July 11, 2008

This Snapping Turtle was laying her eggs on the hard-pack right beside the tarmac on Gills Pier Road. She may be forty or fifty years old, and was covered with hairy moss. The eggs will hatch late summer (if those little ones are lucky and don't get dug up and eaten), and are laid there for the heat from the sun. Then the hatchlings have to run the gamut of cars and predators. There is another nest close by along a driveway. We wish them luck!
