Leelanau is for fishing!
There are many lakes throughout Leelanau.
I have fished plenty of them too.
There is one lake, however, the holds a special place in my heart.
This little gem is called School Lake.
You see, I learned how to fish from my grandfather and father on that lake.
I have had only fun times too; catching little pan-ners to even keeper bass and pike.
I have taken pictures, dinners, and many fond memories from that lake.
There have been days where the fish don't bite, and days where they just won't stop.
I have seen a family of swans, Canadian geese, mallards, and even a bald eagle.
There have been otters, beavers, herring, turtles, frogs, and even a few deer.
The past has seen relatives' houses on the water to now empty spots along the shore.
There was a time where you could take the channel to Bass Lake, without getting out of your boat.
Over the years, the water levels have risen and fallen.
The landscape has been filled with the brilliant colors of fall,
To the cold winds and snows of winter.
So, that is my answer to "Why Leelanau?"
It is a part of my history and traditions.
It is the first thing I think of when ever Leelanau is mentioned.
It is my slice of heaven, my little gem.

As a member of the annual May tradition of fishing School Lake I second the sentiment. I'd like to give a big wooossshhh and bonus shout-out to all the May Fitters! It is almost time. Get that tackle box sorted and ready.
