When I was eleven (about 30 years ago :-) I received my very first LED watch for Christmas. During that break from school, I was out playing in the swamp on the south side of our house–we had 400 feet on South Lake Leelanau, and sufficient snowfall combined with a little bit of thawing and re-freezing made those swamp woods a Tonka truck heaven.

Peshawbestown Pow Wow

By Leelanau Conservancy at 9:00 am on Thursday, February 21, 2008

There's no need to drive in to a big city for entertainment when in Leelanau.  In fact there aren't any big cities to contend with!  But there is plenty of entertainment, especially in August, and not all involving sun, sand, and water!  This photo was taken at the colorful Native American Pow Wow held annually in Peshawbestown.

The Crystal River in winter garb

By Leelanau Conservancy at 9:00 am on Thursday, February 21, 2008

My short story is, my mother's uncle purchased land in Glen Arbor in the 1940s which has subsequently been handed down through the generations. I've been going there all my life and my wife fell in love with the area immediately upon arrival.

Our favorite things to do are 'all-natural' activities, such as sailing on Big Glen, canoeing down the Crystal River, hiking the trails in Sleeping Bear National Park, climbing and walking the dunes to Lake Michigan, watching the sunset where ever we can get a comfortable seat and good view.

This is one scene (of many I have) of the Crystal River. Thanks!

A child's Leelanau vision

By Leelanau Conservancy at 9:00 am on Thursday, February 21, 2008

This submitted drawing ("crayoning?") was done by my grand-daughter, Nadia Burns, shortly after her fourth birthday, as a Mother’s day card for me last May. I think it sums up very well what a young child might feel about Leelanau/Leland.
