A "real life" mystery

Leelanau offers so many unique opportunities for building traditions and sharing adventures with my imaginative grandsons.  No TVs or DVDs needed!  In this case, a "real life" mystery was discovered on South Manitou Island, and included a boat ride, jeep ride, and a trip back in time touring the old farms, school, and cemetary.  What more could a kid want?  I'm grateful to have this to offer my grandchildren, and hope they'll want to offer it to theirs.

Buena Vista

In Leelanau we are surrounded by water.  The sand and water is a favorite subject for photographs.  And sunsets.  Sunsets over the lake can be spectacular.  But sometimes if you get up early enough you just might be surprised by the beauty.  There is no water in this photo.  This was taken inland, overlooking Cedar.

Bohemian Memories

Bohemian Road (CO 669) crosses M-22, and heads straight until it hits Lake Michigan. You will know the road ended because there is actually a sign there that says, "Road Ends." Trees line both sides of 669, and Shalda Creek cuts through the road about a quarter of the way down. If you know what to look for, you can see shadows of the past as you drive down this road. All you need to do is look for the footprints left in time. Sometimes, they have blown away, but if you look close, you can see that there are stains that have been left behind, unable to be erased.

Painter's delight and worth preserving

By Leelanau Conservancy at 9:00 am on Monday, January 28, 2008

As landscape artists we are driven and inspired in our work by natural beauty. Leelanau County can easily say it is a source of world-class beauty. From the National Lakeshore to Northport, the fields, vistas, barns and beaches are a painter’s delight and worth preserving. This is a photo of Melanie Parke and Richard Kooyman (not shown) carrying and setting up their easels out into a field off of M-109. It usually takes several trips to carry all the equipment, easels and canvas out to a location to paint. Hey, why isn't Pedro, our Portuguese Waterdog, carrying anything?
