It’s a true statement to say that few communities have gone to the lengths that Omena has to protect its natural and historical features and small town charm. Over the years, different groups have formed to preserve a cherry farm and several historic structures including the social hub of this small berg – the post office. When scenic woodlands on Omena Point were threatened by development, an association formed to buy the land. They later sought the help of the Leelanau Conservancy to forever protect 110 acres through the Conservancy’s purchase of a conservation easement.

While the accomplishments are great, there is still so much to do to permanently protect the area surrounding this very special bend in the road. Following many discussions, the Conservancy with the support of various groups established the "Omena Fund." This new fund will compliment the efforts of existing groups by providing additional support for preserving the natural features and scenic vistas integral to Omena’s character.

The Fund has several features. First, tax deductible contributions to the Conservancy’s Omena Fund are earmarked for land conservation projects in the Omena area. Second, the fund allows the Conservancy to rapidly respond to opportunities with willing landowners. And finally, the Conservancy can lend its expertise in conservation land transactions and tackle projects that affect the quality of life of all Omena area residents.
